The team at Oasis HR would like to send massive CONGRATULATIONS to one of our colleagues, Andy Waterhouse, who cycled a seriously impressive 500 miles with a group, raising an absolutely amazing £10,000 for the charity Challengeaid.
The cycle ride was a 500 mile sportive across Europe which involved passing through 5 countries in 4 days. A serious feat to say the least! Andy, who joined us as a researcher in November 2013 and has progressed quickly to become a much loved member of our team, has put in some seriously dedicated training over the last 4 months. This included cycling to work every day (over 10k) and doing some mammoth training in the Surrey Hills over the weekends, all on top of smashing his professional goals!
The £10,000 the group raised will be used by Challengeaid to build a ‘School of Hope’ in Kibera. The schools provide a place for students living in poverty, in Africa, to go to which offers things that we can often take for granted such as desks, chairs, lighting and most importantly up to date text books. Students are given a real lifeline with opportunities to succeed and escape poverty in a safe and conducive learning environment. The charity has already set up eleven “Schools of Hope” and has a mission to open another ten in Nairobi’s slum settlements of Kibera, Korogocho, Kawangware and Pumwani. Andy, alone, raised an incredible £1000, for Challengeaid and is hoping to replicate this amount for the mental health charity Mind, which is a cause very close to his heart. Mind aim to improve services, raise awareness and promote understanding around mental health. The charity supports over 250,000 people across England and Wales. Their services include supported housing, crisis helplines, drop-in centres, employment and training schemes, counselling and befriending. To view more about the charity click here.
Andy Waterhouse, Researcher at OasisHR comments:
“As you can see from the photo on the right we were pretty happy when we finally got to Paris!! Nearly 30 hours on the bikes over the 4 days was worth all the effort for that one night in Paris… not to mention us smashing the £10k target for Challengeaid – a small Welsh charity that makes a difference from the bottom up, and that ensures that every penny of sponsorship (admin costs are covered by corporate sponsors!) goes to changing childrens’ lives. Thanks for all the support!” – Andy Waterhouse
