2019 is set to be a busy 12 months for the HR Think Tank Series, and kicking us off for the year is Richard Larkin who’s hosting our 3rd Brexit focused Think Tank on 7th February.

Ahead of the Think Tank, titled ‘Navigating the Brexit Haze from a People Perspective‘ we grabbed coffee with Richard to get to know our host a little better.

1. What does it feel like to work at Inmarsat?

There’s something for everyone here. It’s exciting, unknown and even a little interestingly scary at times. The people (both HR and the wider population) are great and I massively buy-in to the whole uniqueness of what we do. There’s a big ‘feel good factor’ that comes with working at Inmarsat; for instance it’s so empowering to know that we save six lives a day at sea. It’s the best place I’ve ever worked.

2. What do you do to enjoy a positive work/life balance?

I try to have fun whilst at work and encourage my team too to enjoy their work. I believe we have a really strong team spirit.We are a great HR function and have fun along the way which provides a good balance. It’s definitely a work hard and play hard vibe with a great social atmosphere.

3. What’s your greatest success to date in your role at Inmarsat?

Gaining control of our recruitment spend/process and totally changing the team. We’ve been able to move from 98% agency to 58% direct sourcing in a two-year time frame. Whilst I would never strive to go above 70% direct (agencies absolutely have their place) it’s great to be in a position where we can focus more on technology and other cost avoidance areas.

4. What’s the first thing you do in the morning to set your day up for success?

A coffee from Nincomsoup. I then look at my calendar for the following day so I can properly prepare and structure my day accordingly. I also tend to get into the office pretty early so I can crack on before the rest of the team arrives.

5. Favourite technology hack you’d recommend to your peers?

 They’ve been around for a while but I still massively rate those pens that automatically upload your notes to your computer and record your meetings! I find them SO useful for referring back to.

6. What books or articles have you read recently that have inspired you?

I’m actually not that big a reader. However, I really enjoy reading autobiographical stuff and loved Barack Obama’s first book (Dreams from My Father). I found it very thought-provoking and useful from a leadership/coaching perspective.
