Many HR functions are tarred with the brush of being reactive and not overly strategic. This perception is largely reflective of the days of traditional personnel departments that predominantly responded to employee grievances and workforce issues. HR was, and in many cases still is, considered to be a ‘support function’, as opposed to a function that strategically leads, shapes and guides a business. This can be incredibly frustrating and limiting for HR professionals, as it restricts their scope of influence and generally results in a pure ‘fire-fighting’ role.
For HR to truly be strategic, the business needs to buy-in to the value of the function and ensure HR has a presence in future-thinking and planning conversations.
