The HR Think Tank Series jumped at the chance to partner with Cecilia, for this special Think Tank, following the launch of her practitioner led research in Spring 2019 – Bereavement, Mental Health & the Workplace.
There are over 40 ways an individual is likely to experience grief in their lifetime. From the death of a friend or family member, to the end of a relationship. However, employers are often left ill-equipped to support their staff in returning to a ‘functioning life’ following a bereavement. Under The Employment Standards Code, employees are allowed to take up to three days ‘bereavement leave’ to deal with the death of a family member (this includes the death of a child). THREE. DAYS. It’s outrageous!
As HR professionals, it’s time we did something to address this outdated, unfit for purpose approach to ‘supporting’ employees. Not only because it’s the right thing to do, but because the current approach is damaging our businesses and staff both emotionally and commercially.
